A small island located in an Italian lagoon just off Venice, Poveglia Island has been a checkpoint for travelers, home to an insane asylum and a final destination for victims of the Black Death. The island itself is said to be primarily made up of the cremains of hundreds of thousands of plague victims who - according to legend - were forcibly confined on the island in the 1500s.
In the 1920s, a doctor working at the then operational insane asylum threw himself to his death from the bell tower. Rumor had it that the man had been a butcher, performing cruel and inhuman experiments on his helpless victims.
In 1968, the island was abandoned. Tourists are not permitted on the island, fishermen avoid its waters and Poveglia is considered to be a badly haunted, demon-infested pit where no one in their right mind would dare venture.
This did not, however, stop the crew of Ghost Adventures, who arranged to spend an entire night alone on the deserted island.
Very interesting about the island. It rather cries out for a horror novel to be set there doesn't it? Hmm...
